In the dance studio of Owen Arts Center, every costume heel and sock alike echoes in a hollow boom off the pale wood floors. The fluorescent lights cast yellowish, green-hued shadows on the 30 dancers warming up. A performer hums, others mingle. The room radiates with the gentle bustle of ball changes as they work to deliver the perfect performance.
Dancers rotate in and out as they apply final touches to makeup, change wardrobes and film social content. But then the studio door whips open, and the room hushes. Anne Westwick, the show’s artistic director, steps into the space.
“Is this supposed to be you warming up vigorously?” she says with her arms outstretched.
