Happy Halloween to my Everyday-ers! I hope it was safe and full of delicious candy!
I ended up completing two different costumes this year, both by piecing together various garments. I am so proud of these Ruby originals!
Costume 1: Gwen from Total Drama Island
This costume was one I have wanted to do since I was a young girl! I always related to Gwen's blunt intelligence and determined spirit. She wants to win TDI like it's nobody's business!
For Gwen's costume, I started off looking for base materials at the thrift store. This step included finding two undershirts for the top part of the costume. I decided to swap the colors based on what I could find, and it turned out well! I then cut the necklines of the two selected shirts. This still presented me with the issue of fit, as the top layer was loose. Therefore, I improvised and pulled a technique I've learned where you stick your arms through the sleeve holes without putting the neck hole over your head. It makes the top into a bolero, creating the cap sleeve look.
After this, I moved on to the other elements. I put on a black velvet skirt I had, black sheer tights, a black tank, and some thick alternative boots.
The final touch was cosmetics! Instead of dying my hair for the role, I decided on hair spray paint. As you know, I have split-dyed hair, which made the completion of this easy. I attempted with teal blue extensions, but this looked distracting and cheap. I topped everything off with a pale, simple look and a purple lipstick I layered with blue eyeshadow.
There was a lot of problem-solving and creativity involved in this costume, but I think it turned out great! Honestly, I did not want to take it off. It was so fun being a goth for a day!
Costume 2: A Beauty School Dropout
This costume turned out to be one of my favorites of ALL TIME! I got so many compliments, even having some Grease fans come to take photos with me. I happened to unintentionally twin with my best friend back in Arizona, who dawned a Sally costume Halloween night. It was the perfect choice.
To start, I gathered inspiration from the real Beauty School Dropout costumes. I then hit a thrift store, where I found the silver sequined, vintage halter top you see in the pictures. I paired this top with some metallic shorts from Amazon.
As for the cape, I ordered a special, short cape (as they are called) off a salon website, but it wasn't going to arrive in time. This is where the true creativity stepped in. I ran to a couple Sally Beauty stores where I found this translucent silver cape. It was a full-length shampoo cape which was not the vision for the costume. I would've looked like an alien ship if I kept it that long. Maybe even a Chipotle burrito.
Instead, I turned the cape backward and cut it in the curved, butterfly-wing pattern you see in the pictures. After a couple of tries of snipping and shaping, I achieved the look.
Next was the mission of the hairpiece. There is no way I would wear that hat, though I do believe I could make one. Instead, I ordered some silver hair rollers and clips from Amazon. From there, I experimented with different directions and placements of the rollers. I figured out that if I wrapped them around my face and created a bump with my hair on the crown of my head, I could form a cone-like shape. With some teasing, hairpinning, and hairspray, we reached the perfect dropout look.
I topped off the costume with a colorful makeup look inspired by the 70s, featuring a cherry red pop of color on the lip. I would 100% wear this look again. I love it!
This is a fun little TikTok I made because of course, I have to pretend I'm in Grease! I do love musicals after all.
I bet all of your costumes rocked! If you ever need some costume help or DIY suggestions, leave them in the comments and I can give you my advice.
