In the building I have my computer science lab, they have a bookshelf labeled “free books”. They are all ancient texts of outdated computer systems and coding languages that live on only in the minds of coders over 50 (shoutout you Dad!).
The bookshelf got me thinking… If I carried one of these around, what would people think? Would they notice? Do they think I’m smarter? So I did.
Meet “A Guide to Expert Systems”! Do I understand a singular word in Donald A. Waterman’s book? Not one! So I walked around campus, watching eyes glance down and trying to comprehend the prehistoric brick I held.
But this wasn’t the end. What if I made fake book covers and carried around those, watching what reactions I could gather? So I created a list of potential books, trying to strike a chord between believability and the shock of "Is she really reading that?".
